about

CACIQUE'97 is a afrobeat collective with Mozambican and Portuguese origins, twelve experienced musicians that integrate several known bands, in distinct musical genres.
The passion for Fela Kuti and Tony Allen´s music joined these twelve musicians with a common goal: create a collective that mirrored the mixture of Lisbon, crossing the Afro-beat, characteristic rhythm of Nigeria, with the musical tradition of the Portuguese speaking countries in Africa and Brazil.
Cacique'97 want to give rise to a global soundtrack of new times without losing the activism and promotion of social awareness, so characteristic of Afro-beat.
The debut album in CD + vinyl 7" format was published in 2009. It was the first album of Afro-beat made in Portugal, which was received with great reviews in national and international press and was considered one of the albums of the year in Portugal.
With a vibrant and warm sound and a contagious energy on stage, this orchestra of twelve elements have captivated audiences and their number of fans has been growing, asserting CACIQUE´97 as one of the most innovative and important bands of Afro-beat at European level.
